O'Neil, who was in her high-school times at the time of the auditions, auditioned in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. The judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 round. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places, respectively. Judges were shocked by this and advised the audience to vote for contestants like Melissa with the best singing abilities. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was announced by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
