O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton located in Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. In commercials, she appeared before moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. The career of O'Grady began as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward.
